 Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina joined representatives from The Strohm Foundation to make a gift to the Stony Brook Cancer Center on December 3. STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 29, 2026 — The Stony Brook Cancer Center today announced that the Strohm Foundation has pledged a $335,000 gift for an endowment to advance innovative cancer research and strengthen long‑term support for scientific discovery. This gift will be amplified through the New York State endowment match program and the Simons Infinity Investment, which will generate a total impact of $1,005,000 for cancer research and the university’s unrestricted endowment. This investment will fuel groundbreaking research and expand resources for future generations. “The Strohm Foundation’s generosity is accelerating discoveries that will change lives. Edward Strohm, executive director of The Strohm Foundation, has been a longstanding advocate for expanding research into cancers affecting 9/11 first responders. His personal experience with a 9/11‑related cancer has shaped the foundation’s mission to increase awareness, accelerate research and support the communities most affected by exposures resulting from the World Trade Center attacks. “Our foundation’s mission is deeply personal. I know firsthand what a 9/11‑related cancer diagnosis means, and I’ve seen the toll it continues to take on so many first responders,” said Strohm. “Supporting Stony Brook’s research is our way of honoring their sacrifice and helping ensure that the science keeps moving forward. We believe that investing in innovative research today will lead to better answers, and better outcomes, for the people who have given so much.” The Strohm Foundation’s commitment continues to play a significant role in advancing studies focused on cancers disproportionately impacting first responders. The foundation, which recently fulfilled its previous $100,000 commitment to Stony Brook Cancer Center research, has been particularly engaged in supporting Stony Brook Cancer Center’s efforts to investigate the most prevalent cancers among those who served on and after September 11, 2001.
